Niomar Moniz Sodré Bittencourt, Brazil (acquired directly from the artist)
A self-portrait of Calder is hidden in the work: he has painted himself in profile, wearing a beret pointed by his own dedication to Niomar. She is also depicted, wearing a blue dress and high heels. Both surround Le Cirque, one of the artist's first masterpieces, produced between 1926 and 1931, and now in the Whitney Museum in New York. This miniature circus, with a ring less than a metre wide, is made up of wires and automatons orchestrating a veritable choreography, considered to be one of the first artistic performances.
